Chess+Math Lab team is committed to empower minds through our free chess and math activities. All three co-founders (Derek Jin is now a college student as advisor) were high school students with award-winning chess and math credentials and coaching experiences.

Alexander Meng
(Co-President & Co-Founder)

Alexander is a US Chess Federation Chess Expert and Candidate Master. He tied for first place in the 2017 Spiegel Cup State Championship for ages 8 and under, earned 16th place in the 2018 National Grade Championship, and secured 3rd place in the 2020 Spiegel Cup State Championship for ages 11 and under, tied for first place in the 2025 Spiegel Cup State Championship in high school section. In 2020, he represented the state of Massachusetts in the John D. Rockefeller III National Tournament of Elementary School State Champions, where he achieved 5th place.

In addition to his chess accomplishments, Alexander has been teaching chess for many years and is a certified chess tournament director, having directed several USCF-rated tournaments. In mathematics, he has been a member of the MIT PRIMES STEP program and has qualified for the AIME twice. Alexander was also awarded the summa cum laude certificate and gold medal from the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. Beyond chess and math, Alexander is an active member of his school’s crew team and concert band, and he enjoys playing soccer and the saxophone.

FM Eric Feng
(Co-President & Co-Founder)

Eric attends Acton-Boxborough Regional High school in the Class of 2027, who has competed in chess since age six. He earned his US Chess National Master title at age 13 in 2022 and his FIDE Master title in 2026, achieving peak ratings of 2339 (USCF) and 2311 (FIDE Live). Eric is a seven-time Massachusetts State Spiegel Cup Invitational Champion (or Co-Champion), claiming first-place finishes across the 11U, 14U (tie for 1st), Middle School, and High School divisions consecutively from 2020 to 2026. On the national scholastic chess, Eric won the Ursula Foster 15U Memorial Award at the 2024 Denker High School Tournament of Champions and placed 4th at both the 2023 National Barber Middle School Invitational and the 2024 National K-12 Grade (10th Grade) Championship. As an avid blitz player, he hold blitz titles including first place at the 2025 continental open Blitz, first place at the 2024 Massachusetts Open Blitz, the 1st place at the 2022 Weeramantry National Blitz (U2200) and second place at the 2021 North American Youth Blitz (U14).

Beyond competitive play, Eric is a dedicated community leader passionate about chess education. He has volunteered as a youth chess instructor and online tournament organizer since 2022, and he currently serves as Co-President of his high school chess club and President of another chess non-profit org ChessInspire (from June 2026). Outside of chess, he has a passion for music, he plays piano and clarinet, and has won multiple awards in the Massachusetts Bay State Piano Competition. He is also an active athlete on his high school’s varsity track team.

Justin Li
(Vice President)

Justin attends Belmont Hill School in the Class of 2026. Currently he is a US Chess Federation Chess Expert. He is one of the top scholastic players in Massachusetts and won many local chess tournaments. He began playing chess at the age of seven and has been volunteering teaching chess classes since fifth grade. Justin has co-organized chess events and volunteered for various not-for-profit organizations. Apart from chess, Justin competes in track and field and enjoys reading and digital music.

Ethan Qiao
(Vice President)

Ethan Qiao began his chess journey in 2017 at the age of 9. Over the years, he has competed in numerous chess tournaments, earning several prizes. In 2020, he secured 31st place in the 6th Grade National Championship. The following year, in 2021, Ethan placed 3rd in the U2100 section of the Boston Elite Thanksgiving Open. In 2023, he claimed 2nd place in the Class A section of the Eastern Class Championship and earned the title of annual club champion at the Plainville Chess Club. His peak chess rating is 1953.

Ethan is currently a sophomore at the Commonwealth School. Beyond chess, he is deeply passionate about violin performance and is a member of the NEC Baroque Ensemble.

Bohan Wang
(Chess Instructor)

Bohan, a student in the Acton-Boxborough Regional High School Class of 2028, is an accomplished chess player who holds the title of US Chess Candidate Master Expert with a peak rating of 2118. Since playing his first Over-the-Board (OTB) chess tournament at age eight, he has achieved success in numerous local competitions. In 8th grade, he won second place (on a tiebreak for first) in the Massachusetts Spiegel Cup Invitational Finals’ middle school section, In 9th grade, he won national grade chess championship 10th place.

Since 7th grade, , he has been sharing his knowledge by teaching chess to beginner-level students through online lessons and chess camps since 8th grade.

Steven Feng
(Chess Instructor)

Steven attends Acton-Boxborough Regional High school in the Class of 2029. On his 6th birthday, he played his first rated chess tournament. On his chess journey, he reached a peak USCF rating of 1898 and has qualified for the Massachusetts Spiegel Cup invitational finals for 4 consecutive years. Since 7th grade, he started teach kids chess beginners via online lessons or chess camp.

He has qualified math invitational competition AIME since 8th grade, and started from 9th grade, he teaches primary school students singapore math in Acton Chinese Language School. His other hobbies include playing basketball and practicing flute.

Frank Cao
(Chess Instructor)

Frank is a US Chess Federation Expert. He played his first OTB chess tournament when he was seven years old, over the years he played in a lot of chess tournaments and won many prizes. He won a bunch of trophies in the Future Master Chess Academy, he also won the Gus Gossellin grade championship in K-2. Frank played in the Hurvitz Cup twice, he led Team Harrington won the 2nd and 1st places. Frank also went to the K-12 nationals twice and got tied 15th in 3rd grade and tied 20th in 4th grade. Frank got to play in the spiegel cup twice in K-5, he got tied 2nd and tied 3rd. Frank played in the world amateur team east tournament twice, he won a prize once for the first place in U10. In 2024, Frank got invited to play in the world cadet chess tournament in Italy.

Frank is currently a 5th grader in Harrington Elementary School. Beyond chess, he has a passion for math. Frank has got 1st and 2nd places in Math Kangaroo.

Jianda Liu
(Chess Instructor)

Jianda attends Belmont High School in the Class of 2028. He has been playing chess competitively for seven years. He has achieved a peak USCF rating of approximately 1950 and currently holds a FIDE rating of over 1750. He is ranked 115th among 1,418 players overall in Massachusetts, reflecting his strong competitive experience and dedication to the game.

In addition to competative chess, Jianda regularly teaches chess in his community and enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience with other players. Through his teaching, he hopes to help students strengthen their chess fundamentals, develop effective strategies, and learn practical tips and techniques that they can apply in their own games.

Beyond chess and mathematics, Jianda is an active member of his school’s running team.

Chasen Hu
(Chess Instructor)

Chasen is a student in the Acton-Boxborough Regional High School Class of 2027. He began playing Over-the-Board (OTB) chess tournaments at the age of six and remains an active participant in his high school’s chess club events.

Beyond chess, Chasen is also a dedicated athlete and plays on his high school’s junior varsity basketball team.
